I first learned about ISTE in 2003 and used their website as a springboard for many projects and papers I wrote for my masters degree. Technology is education was not new but it was growing by leaps and bounds back then. As time moves on, so must these organizations. I am glad that you and others out there in these broader(bigger) roles will continue to hold organizations transparent and accountable for those whose voices may not be heard.
In my opinion, working together (business, non profits, government, community) for the benefit of our students is the most important part of this discussion. I am just learning more about the WI DPI and the role it plays in Wisconsin. I have just become a more union involved educator as an elected CWUC representative.
Keep asking the hard questions.
HeidiAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5725702152663708461.post-72577391552175576112008-06-20T22:14:00.000-05:002008-06-20T22:14:00.000-05:00Thanks to all for the comments. I appreciate your...Thanks to all for the comments. I appreciate your candor and viewpoints.

Sylvia -

We were exchanging ideas and thoughts and I believed I was listening, processing and trying to make sense out of the whole conversation. For those who know me and have dealt with me, they know I am not into cheap shots or self-promotion.

My two initial questions to Dr. Stager was to see if his comments about NECC and ISTE were congruent with conferences and organizations he led. From my perspective, the goals of corporate sponsorship appear the same regardless if dues is paid to an organization or not. That was the jist of my questions and comments and I have thought about it extensively today as well.

I did mean it when I said I harbor no ill will towards you or Dr. Stager. I still feel that way.

I will say that the screen shots I posted we done HOURS after the Twitter discussion when I wrote my blog piece, not during. The screen shots were used to illustrate what I was responding to and how I responded to it.

I thought very hard about the initial post and made a conscious decision to focus on what MY questions were and MY responses so as not to misrepresent your or Dr. Stager's views. I believed I accomplished that in the post.

I have also thought very deliberately about this response, or even if I should respond. I finally decided to respond not to lash out but to clarify my views and words.

I look forward to seeing you at NECC. I will make sure to stop by the GenYES booth so I can talk to you in person in an effort to resolve any differences that may still exist.

SJCStuart Ciske, Ph.D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08226913080314872402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5725702152663708461.post-129582165047442792008-06-20T12:48:00.000-05:002008-06-20T12:48:00.000-05:00I'm going to sidestep the obvious, and bring this ...I'm going to sidestep the obvious, and bring this home instead. The now retired woman who coordinated GWETC for many years feared that people would stop coming if we streamed and podcasted sectionals at our Governor's Wisconsin Educational Technology Conference.

I went head to head on that issue as we offered several WADEN presentations that we videoconferenced out of the building and streamed as well. (Long before uStream)

In the end, the restrictions that were placed probably led to the demise of GWETC ~ as much as any oft cited funding issues. BECAUSE the restrictions were placed, the conference became irrelevant (how many programs on "inspiration" can one sit through?), attendance dropped, and so did financing.

ISTE is much larger (International of course), and has more diverse funding sources. They may or may not "get it" based on the objections of a handful of users.

But how "we" all react will largely influence where we go to create those NEW communities of support. I highly doubt nor am I predicting that ISTE or NECC would go away - but fame is a fickle mistress, and its not too unthinkable that something new will come along.

Some of us have been around for many changes. With that longevity comes patience. The stars that burn the brightest usually burn out first. ;) Education is an a "follow me" state right now. Don't worry- it will come around. Might not look the same, but change is the only constant.Dan Grosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16850018310212088123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5725702152663708461.post-37501266964986699202008-06-20T08:34:00.000-05:002008-06-20T08:34:00.000-05:00Stuart, one of the responsibilities of bloggers is...Stuart, one of the responsibilities of bloggers is to call for transparency and openness among vendors. In that spirit, it is important that ALL educators call for more transparency and openness, closely examining the relationship between big business and education.

We all need to take our role as citizen journalists (a.k.a. bloggers) and be aware of the responsibilities that entails. This isn't optional in these times, but essential to our survival and the survival of democracy.

Wishing you Sylvia's forgiveness,

Miguel GuhlinMiguel Guhlin (@mGuhlin)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13515062893694709221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5725702152663708461.post-2728365644330608922008-06-20T07:50:00.000-05:002008-06-20T07:50:00.000-05:00I don't know anything about the debate you had wit...I don't know anything about the debate you had with gary or sylvia, both of whom I have met f2f. I would like to hear their side before rushing to an opinion as I know they both mean what they say.

I totally agree that ISTE is floundering. They are afraid and acting out of that fear. We HAVE heard from ISTE-in the fine print revealed on 6/19. Now the real question is, what are you going to do about it?Durffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05683687754001195123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5725702152663708461.post-37191988313102357672008-06-20T01:47:00.000-05:002008-06-20T01:47:00.000-05:00Stuart,I'm shocked that you have reproduced such a...Stuart,
I'm shocked that you have reproduced such a blatantly one-sided account of pieces of Twitter conversation that took place off and on over hours with many participants who you've conveniently excised. Not to mention the fact that Twitter was down for significant times this evening. Who knows how many things were lost forever.

In fact, I thought we were exchanging ideas. I patiently answered your questions, even when it was clear you weren't listening to the answers. And here I find that you were busy taking screenshots to build an out-of-context, confused narrative that conflates several different topics that have nothing to do with one another.

You've misrepresented me and my comments. Saying, "I harbor no ill will" just doesn't cut it. I expect an apology.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
